Athletic Trainer
What is an Athletic Trainer?
Athletic trainers are licensed health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize patient activity and participation in athletics. The practice of athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions and certain medical conditions in order to minimize impairments, and functional limitations . The profession of athletic training is recognized by The American Medical Association. The most common athletic training work settings include high schools, colleges, universities, professional sports teams, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and physician's offices.
Mallory Whitman
This is Mallory's third year at Grant Community High School, and second year as Head Athletic Trainer. This is her 6th year as a Certified Athletic Trainer. She is a Grant alum and graduated with the class of 2013. In 2018, she received her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Carroll University, and earned her Master's degree in Sports, Fitness and Recreational Leadership from DePaul University in 2020. Mallory is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and is licensed in the State of Illinois. Mallory resides locally with her husband Kyle and dog Makai.
Student Athletic Trainer Aide Program
The student athletic trainer aide program at Grant Community High School is designed to introduce high school students to the field of athletic training or other allied health professions. Students with an interest in athletic training, physical therapy, exercise science, paramedics, nursing or other fields are encouraged to enter the program. Students will gain knowledge in injury care and are supervised by Grant's certified athletic trainers. Students volunteer their time in the athletic training room 3-5 days/week, and will gain experience at athletic events and games.
