2014 Inductees

Grant Community High School is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. James Lumber, in memoriam, (Class of 1952) and Mr. John Welter (Class of 1967) as the 2014 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees.

Mr. James Lumber

Lumber

During Mr. Lumber’s time at Grant he excelled in academics as well as athletics.  He also served as Class President.  He graduated with the Class of 1952.  Mr. Lumber attended Marquette University on a full football scholarship, graduating with both an undergraduate and graduate degree.  He then proceeded to the University of Michigan where he obtained a law degree.  Mr. Lumber was a teacher and coach at Grant from 1958 to 1961.  He then served as legal counsel for the District for the next 40 years and achieved great distinction in his career as a very well-respected attorney in the community.  From 1989 to 2001, he served as the Mayor of Round Lake.  Mr. Lumber also served on the College of Lake County Board of Trustees for over 35 years, where he was honored in 2003 with the renaming of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts for his dedication to public service.

Mr. John Welter

Welter
Mr. Welter was an all-state athlete while attending GCHS.  While he participated in multiple sports, wrestling was and continues to be his passion.  He graduated with the Class of 1967.  Mr. Welter received an Associate’s degree from the College of Lake County where he also earned a National Championship in wrestling.  He continued his education and received an undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University and a graduate degree from Concordia University.  He spent 32 years as a public school teacher and has coached more than 40 years of wrestling, 25 of those years at Grant.  During his tenure as a coach, he has won two state wrestling championships and represented more teams and finalists at the state competition level than we are able to mention.  He continues to coach and mentor the students of GCHS.

Both inductees have achieved distinction in their profession and in their community.  We wish to recognize both individuals for their loyalty and commitment to their alma mater, Grant Community High School.

Congratulations to the 2014 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees and their families.
