The Grant Community High School February Student of the Month is senior John Schmidt, son of Louis and Mireya Schmidt of Round Lake.
John's academic achievements include induction into the National Honor Society during his sophomore year; he has earned A’s in all classes during his high school career; he has appeared on Honor Roll and Scholars’ List every semester and multiple times on Academic Top Ten; he scored a perfect 36 on his ACT; and he scored a 5, “extremely well qualified,” on all AP tests he has taken. His remarkable 5.282/4.00 GPA places him 3rd in his class of 482 seniors.
His extracurricular activities include participation in Cross Country, earned All-Conference junior and senior years; Track, earned All-Conference, All-County, All-Sectional junior year; FBLA, currently serving as President, and took 5th place in Business Math at State Conference sophomore year; and Math Team, 2-time ICTM State Qualifier and conference champ senior year.
John has volunteered to help sell concessions multiple times for FBLA. He has also helped with Grandparents’ Day, roadside cleanups for NHS, FBLA, and Boy Scouts, PADS lunch making, Fall Festival, and book checkout for NHS. He also volunteered at Big Hollow for their Math Night.
John’s interests outside of Grant include the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2014, and he enjoys disc golfing with friends.
His plans for the future include earning a degree in physics or mechanical engineering. He is exploring his university options.
