Music
The purpose of the vocal and instrumental music classes is to develop greater knowledge,
understanding and skills through ensemble performance, listening, appreciation, history, theory
and rehearsal techniques. The goal is to improve the individual’s music abilities while
enhancing specific ensemble’s development. In addition, the Music Department hopes that
students will develop the musical skills and appreciation that will continue throughout their high
school experiences.

Course #0619 Men’s Chorus
Prerequisite: None
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course length: two semesters Course credit: 1
This is an introductory course to basic choral musicianship for male voices. Students will learn basic concepts in the fundamentals of choral performance. Students rehearse and perform choral music of various styles, cultures and historical periods in concerts throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on music reading, developing productive rehearsal habits and producing a beautiful tone. Attendance at and full participation in all after school rehearsals and performances is mandatory for all students and constitutes a portion of the overall grade. This course may be repeated for elective credit.

Students rehearse and perform choral music of various styles, cultures and historical periods in concerts throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on music reading, developing productive rehearsal habits and producing a beautiful tone. Attendance at and full participation in all after school rehearsals and performances is mandatory for all students and constitutes a portion of the overall grade. This course may be repeated for elective credit.

This is an advanced course in choral musicianship. An audition with the instructor is required. Students will reinforce concepts in the fundamentals of choral performance. Students rehearse choral music of various styles, cultures and historical periods in preparation for performance in several concerts throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on music reading, developing productive rehearsal habits and producing a beautiful tone. Attendance at and full participation in all after school rehearsals and performances is mandatory for all students and constitute a portion of the overall grade. This course may be repeated for elective credit.
Course #0670 Honors Choir
Prerequisite: Treble Choir or Men’s Chorus and/or Mixed Chorus, department approval
Grade level: 11, 12 Course length: two semesters Course credit: 1
This is an advanced course in choral musicianship. An audition with the instructor is required. This course meets as part of the Concert Choir class and students are responsible for the same coursework as Concert Choir. Students will be challenged with an intense study of additional work. This work includes recitals, written performance critiques, research papers, presentations, contest performances and additional ensemble participation. Attendance at and full participation in all after school rehearsals, auditions, contests and performances are mandatory for all students and constitute a portion of the overall grade. This course may be repeated for elective credit.
Course #0610 Beginning Band
Prerequisite: None
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course length: two semesters Course credit: 1
This course is designed for students who have never played a musical instrument or second year students who may need remedial work. The course introduces basic instrumental music technique including tone production, breath control, melodic and rhythmic patterns, practice habits, and experiences in performing. Requirements include daily home practice and participation in all band concerts. Students are required to provide their own instrument.
Course #0617 Symphonic Band - Percussion
Prerequisite: Department approval
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course length: two semesters Course credit: 1
Students in this class will develop musical skills and knowledge through a variety of musical styles. Instruction will be maximized to address issues regarding students who play percussion instruments only. Students will perform at home football and basketball games, pep rallies, concerts, marching band competitions and solo and ensemble contests. Additionally, students will be expected to participate in summer band camp, parades, and community events. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of the school day are required for this class and attendance does affect student grades. This course can be repeated for elective credit.

Students in this class will develop musical skills and knowledge through a variety of musical styles. Instruction will be maximized to address issues regarding students who play wind (brass and woodwind) instruments only. Students will perform at home football and basketball games, pep rallies, concerts, and marching band competitions. Additionally, students will be expected to participate in summer band camp, parades, and community events. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of the school day are required for this class and attendance does affect student grades. This course can be repeated for elective credit.
Course #0671 Honors Band
Prerequisite: Department approval
Grade level: 11, 12 Course length: two semesters Course credit: 1
This course meets as part of the Symphonic Band – Winds or Symphonic Band – Percussion class. Students will be challenged with an intense study of additional work. This work includes recitals, research papers, journals, presentations, solo and ensemble performances and lessons, and additional ensemble participation. Auditions, performances and concert attendance outside the school day will be required as well as the usual expectations of the Symphonic Band – Winds/Percussion class. This course can be repeated for elective credit.
Course #0614 Flag Corps
Prerequisite: Audition
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course length: one quarter Course credit: .25
This course is for students who are chosen from auditions held in the spring of the previous school year. These students work on developing appreciation and performance skills through the use of flag equipment. During the first quarter, the Symphonic Band combines with the Flag Corps to make up the Marching Band. Attendance at summer band camp, Monday and Tuesday night rehearsals and all performances for home football games and contests are required. This class can be repeated for elective credit. Flag Corps members may also participate in Winter Flags through auditions and the recommendation of the band director.
